Ordering Diagnostic Panels Through Insulin IQ
If you have a great working relationship with your doctor, there’s probably no need to go out on your own and order bloodwork. However, not all of us do, right? Also, owning your own labs can be helpful and powerful in planning and making dietary and lifestyle changes.
Important Note: Unfortunately, the information below only applies to people living in the U.S., but we’re working on finding relationships, opportunities and recommendations for other countries as well as our community grows.
Panels You May Want to Consider:
(depending on your health)
At Insulin IQ we recommend a standard panel that includes CMP, insulin, A1c, lipid panel, C-peptide, free fatty acid and CRP. These are the basic labs for someone who is concernedĀ about their metabolic health.
If you suffer from other things such as fatigue, constipation, heat dysregulation, brain fog or others, we can recommend additional labs.
- Fatigue Associated Labs: CBC to rule out anemia along with possible ferritin to assess iron stores. Vitamin D to check your current status. TSH, free T3 and free T4 to better assess your thyroid. Vitamin B12 will determine your nutritional status for this energy boosting vitamin. Testosterone can be very important when it comes to energy/fatigue.
- Concerns with Cholesterol: Because of all the dogma and teachings in traditional medicine we recommend more specific labs. Most people have a basic lipid panel done with yearly exams, we recommend to look at your Triglyceride : HDL ratio. If your number is <1.5, you are doing fairly well metabolically. You can also check a NMR or Cardiac IQ to better determine the health of your cholesterol. And last, looking at a CT of the heart called a coronary artery calcium score can be very helpful.
- Inflammation: There are many drivers of inflammation and sometimes we need more information. You can check CRP, ESR, uric acid, ferritin and ANA with reflex to get a better understanding of where your inflammation could be coming from.
- Menopause: if you are concerned about your hormones as a woman after the age of 35, we recommend FSH, estradiol and testosterone for a better understanding. You may also consider thyroid testing as this is also impacted as we age, TSH, free T3, free T4.
- Complicated Diabetes: if you are insulin dependent type 2 diabetic and cannot seem to get your blood sugars under control, we have a few additional labs you may want to check. Make sure to get a C-peptide and a fructosamine. You may also want to consider an 8 AM cortisol level if it seems to have a lot of dawn phenomenon.
